(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works on Wednesday stated that several vending operations were removed from along Sheriff Street, Georgetown after owners failed to adhere to its Daytime Clearance Policy.
The ministry on Monday said they are implementing a strict daytime clearance policy, where all trucks, caravans and stalls operating along the Sheriff Street to Mandela Avenue must be removed between 6:00 am and 6:00pm.
The ministry noted however, that vending is permitted outside of the hours outlined. On Wednesday, in a video, the ministry showed several stalls which were removed from the corridor after owners failed to adhere the policy.
“While public cooperation remains the preferred path to order, and the Ministry appreciates those who have complied, we must emphasize that continuous failure to adhere to official notices will result in the immediate removal of obstructions,” the ministry said on Wednesday.
The Public Works Ministry further advised that all costs associated with these removals are the sole responsibility of the defaulting businesses. “To reclaim any seized property, business owners are required to visit the Ministry’s office to settle the outstanding removal costs before the items can be uplifted. The Ministry of Public Works re-emphasizes the importance of public cooperation to ensure order is maintained,” the agency stated.
In a notice issued Monday, the ministry said it recognises the vibrant economic activity on Sheriff Street and its importance to the surrounding community. However, it noted that the restriction is necessary to keep the roadway safe and accessible during peak hours. “To ensure that Sheriff Street remains safe and accessible for everyone during peak hours, the ministry is implementing a strict daytime clearance policy,” the notice stated.
