(Kaieteur News) – Two Berbice men were arrested on Saturday after a firearm and ammunition were discovered during a roadside altercation along the Number 73 Public Road, Corentyne.
The incident occurred at about 17:32hrs while ranks in Regional Division Six were conducting a motorcycle patrol in the area.
According to the Guyana Police Force statement, reports indicate that the ranks observed two men engaged in a fight along the roadway. During the confrontation, one of the men was seen holding what appeared to be a firearm, while the other was armed with a piece of wood.
“Police ranks immediately intervened and ordered both men to cease fighting.” Police said.
During the intervention, the man with the firearm reportedly jumped into a nearby drain where he placed the weapon in a corner before he was apprehended by the ranks.
The weapon was later retrieved and examined. It was identified as a 9mm pistol containing one 9mm round of ammunition in the magazine.
The suspect, a 54-year-old man of Number 73 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, along with the other individual involved in the altercation—a 25-year-old labourer of Number 72 Village, Corentyne—were arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station along with the firearm and ammunition, which were lodged.
Both men were later taken to the Number 75 Regional Hospital where they received medical treatment before being placed into police custody.
Investigations are ongoing.
