Kaieteur Sports – Kemol Savory alongside spinners Anthony Adams and Richie Looknauth were among the stars to hit form following a decent opening practice match played at the Everest Cricket Ground.
With a new-look 4-Day season looming, the defending champs have been getting into playing shape with their usual weekly training sessions with the 3 practice games set to provide real-time game readiness for the players.
Nandu XI folded for a 1st innings 164-10 in pursuit of Imlach XI’s 1st innings score of 180.
Wicket-keeper/batsman Kemol Savory led the innings with a gritty 63 off 146 balls with 4 fours and a pair of sixes.
The senior pair of spinners in Richie Looknauth (3-29) from 25 overs and Anthony Adams (3-36) from 18 overs, were sublime during their respective spells; finding help from young leg-break spinner Nityanand Mathura who pulled in 2-18 inside 5 overs.
Batting a second time, Imlach XI got off to the ideal start thanks to Raymond Perez (29) and first innings half-centurion Ushardeva Balgobin (22), who added 53 for the first wicket.
Right-arm pacer Micah Amsterdam (1-33) got the first breakthrough by removing Balgobin, while spinner Richard Ramdheol (1-2) trapped Perez LBW soon after.
Mavindra Dindyal (6) then fell to medium-pacer Aryan Persaud (1-3) who knocked him over in the 20th over, leaving Brandon Jaikarran (2*) and Johnathan Van Lange (0*) out in the middle as the match was declared a draw, leaving Imlach XI 62-3 in the 2nd innings.
When play resumed earlier in the morning session, the Nandu XI trailed by 70 thanks to the steadiness of Zeynul Ramsammy and Savory, who dropped anchor on day 2 with a half-century partnership.
Day 3 would however belong to the opposition spinners; who never took their feet off the gas as they operated in sync.
Ramsammy (32), who resumed his innings on 30, added just two runs to his total before Looknauth disturbed his woodwork.
Savory did the hard work to reach his half-century after ending day 2 on 25. The left-hander dug in for his fifty which required 121 balls but more importantly helped to stabilize the innings for his team.
But much like his partner a few overs prior, Savory was comprehensively bowled by the off-spinner Looknauth, a wicket which triggered a collapse of wickets.
Young guns like Shamar Apple (3), Richard Ramdheol (2), Thaddeus Lovell (1) were mopped up cheaply, as veteran spinner Adams joined in on the fun alongside Mathura to help clean up the remaining Nandu XI batsmen.
Players will regroup ahead of Match 2 which will bowl off from March 17-19 at the Bourda Ground. (Clifton Ross)
