(Kaieteur News) – With the frequent lost of life on the country’s roadways from vehicular accidents, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) on Friday said there is need for stronger enforcement of road safety regulations.
According to the party, every fatal road accident leaves a lasting impact, not only at the scene of the incident, but within families, communities, and countrywide.
“Road safety is not just a matter of traffic management; it is ultimately about the protection of human life,” the party stated.
According to the main opposition party, days of reviewing and compiling reports of fatal accidents from January 1, “In the first 72 days of this year alone, 21 people have already lost their lives on our roads as a result of motor vehicle accidents. With 293 days still remaining in the year, that figure raises serious questions about where we are heading if this trend continues.”
WIN noted that these incidents have occurred in different parts of the country and under varying circumstances, but collectively they point to “a clear need for stronger and more focused attention on road safety.”
Noting that the country already has traffic laws and enforcement powers designed to address dangerous driving, the Guyana Police Force also has a traffic department tasked specifically with monitoring and enforcing these regulations.
However, the presence of laws and structures must be matched by clear priorities and consistent enforcement on the ground, WIN stressed.
“At a time when lives are being lost on our roads at this rate, road safety enforcement must remain a central operational priority. This means ensuring that traffic patrols are visible and active, particularly along major roadways and in areas where serious accidents occur frequently,” WIN explained.
With mechanisms and systems in place to support enforcement, WIN said their consistent and strategic use is essential.
According to the party, enforcement efforts should be guided by reliable information and a clear understanding of where the greatest risks exist on the roads. WIN noted that there is also importance in regularly reviewing accident patterns and trends, so that enforcement and preventative efforts can be better targeted and more effective.
“Road safety cannot be treated as a secondary issue. When lives are being lost at this pace, it demands serious attention, consistent enforcement, and clear prioritisation, because ultimately, every life lost on our roads is one too many,” the party expressed.
Further, the party addressed also “another deeply troubling issue” affecting families and communities across the country, that is domestic violence escalating into murder.
Noting that this is a serious concern, WIN stated that the laws and support systems exist, but they must be enforced earlier and more effectively so situations like these are addressed before families are torn apart.
“Because whether it is on our roads, within our communities, or inside our homes, the protection of life must always remain our highest priority,” the party disclosed.
