Kaieteur News – Two weeks after surviving a brutal knife attack that left her with more than 25 stab wounds, 15-year-old Tiana Chapman was on Tuesday discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice.
The teenager, who had been fighting for her life in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is now able to walk again; a recovery her family describes as nothing short of miraculous.
Chapman’s mother, Adisea Andrews, 37, told Kaieteur News she was relieved that her daughter survived the vicious assault.
While earlier reports indicated that Chapman had sustained 25 stab wounds, Andrews said the number was actually higher.
The attack occurred on February 24 when 28-year-old Christopher Ali, the teen’s former boyfriend and the father of her child, allegedly ambushed her at a friend’s home not far from her own.
According to reports, the man cornered the teenager and repeatedly stabbed her before leaving her slumped in a chair, severely wounded and bleeding. He then fled the scene.
For several days after the attack, Chapman remained on an oxygen machine in the ICU as doctors worked to stabilise her condition. Despite the severity of her injuries, she began showing remarkable signs of recovery.
On Tuesday, Kaieteur News spoke briefly with the teen as she prepared to leave the hospital. Though she still showed signs of discomfort from the numerous wounds, Chapman appeared in good spirits and spoke clearly.
Where she had once been confined to a hospital bed, unable to move freely, she now walked independently. Her body still bears numerous stitches and staples used to close the wounds inflicted during the attack.
Reflecting briefly on the incident, Chapman said the attack happened suddenly.
Chapman, the third of seven children, had grown up in the same community as the suspect.
Her mother said the two had known each other since childhood, as is common in close-knit communities.
However, Andrews stressed that she never approved of any romantic involvement between her daughter and the older man.
“How I could ever want that to happen when Tiana is a child?” Andrews said. “That boy grow up right here in this community. Everybody know everybody from childhood… but you can’t know a person mind. If people did know a person mind, she woulda know he woulda bore she.”
Chapman will turn 16 in May. Her son, Javed Chapman, is just ten months old.
Andrews explained that when the attack occurred she was working as a cook at a mining camp in the Mazaruni. Because of low tides, she was unable to travel immediately and did not reach the hospital until the following Friday.
“I never abandoned my children,” the single mother said, defending herself against criticism she has received since the incident.
She explained that when she travels to work in the interior she ensures that her children are provided for.
“I never leave them hungry. When I leave to go and work in the backdam, I leave money and ration in the house,” she said. “I tell Tiana, ‘Mama, anything y’all short of, you gon’ go and get the money and buy it.’ Anybody who say I leave my children undone is a liar.”
Andrews also dismissed claims that she supported the relationship between her daughter and Ali. She said there was a time when she called the police after he lingered at their home late at night.
However, she claimed the officers’ response allowed him to escape through the backyard.
Ali remains at large as police in Berbice continue their search for him.
