(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Agriculture is seeking bids for the procurement of vessel tracking devices.
According to a recent opening of bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), nine companies have signaled interest in the ministry’s contract. It is unclear the number of devices the ministry is seeking but bids for the contract ranges from $23 million to $119 million.
Back in May 2024, the ministry announced the introduction of artisanal vessel monitoring devices for fisher folks. These devices, according to the ministry enables the tracking of fishing boats and monitoring of fish populations within the ocean, enhancing safety and efficiency.
During a distribution exercise at the time, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha told fisher folks that “We are not only investing in the physical structure like the wharves and so on, but we will also be putting equipment on your vessels to track you so that we can know where you are fishing and we can monitor you.”
In addition to combating piracy, these devices will enhance the security of fishing activities within Guyana’s borders. The agriculture minister assured that every vessel in the country will eventually be equipped with the device.
This publication understands that since its introduction, over 500 vessels are now equipped the tracking devices.
