Kaieteur Sports – Action in the ongoing GCB U16 Inter-county tournament continued yesterday with big wins for both Berbice and Demerara.
GCB XI slumped to another defeat in this competition, this time failing to capitalize on what was a solid bowling exhibition effort which restricted Essequibo to 134-10 in the 26th over, batting first at LBI Ground.
Medium-pacer Gautam Dhanraj led GCB XI’s bowling with brilliant figures of 5-29 while Niquan Fraser chipped in with 2-37.
Essequibian Timothy Ramdass spanked a brisk 32 with 6 fours while Jonathan Barry (16), Usain Fredricks (15*) and Devraj Persaud (11) lent support earlier.
However, the GCB lads could not replicate such performances with the bat and were reduced to 80-9 with a player retiring hurt.
Openers Tufan Chanderpaul (12) and Shaker Ramesh (19) were the main run-getters, as left-arm spinner Barry led with magical figures of 6-16 while Persaud grabbed 2-17.
At Lusignan, the city boys were muzzled for 120-8 by the end of 50 overs, a strange innings compared to the fireworks which they have provided in the past.
Opener Lomar Seecharran however continued to score runs at an easy clip, leading with a watchful 30 off 50 balls with 6 fours.
All-rounder Afraz Khan again provided much-needed stability despite grinding for 23* off 102 balls, while Nathan Bishop (17) and Ashton Collins (13) tried to get going.
One of the competition’s leading wicket-takers, Berbice skipper Leon Reddy, had another brilliant game, snaring 3-41 with help from Brandon Grimmond (3-8).
The Ancient County boys then had a strong start to the chase, after Luke Amsterdam (14) and Akesh Ramdewar (27) consolidated after losing opener Justin Hicks (8).
However, Asgaralli Nabi steadied the ship with 40* off 49 with 3 fours and a six alongside Altaf Ali (12*), who played a calm hand.
Collins returned to claim 2-23 with his left-arm spin while seamer Prosper Jacobus ended with 1-18. (Clifton Ross)
