(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) is preparing to spend approximately $163 million to drill potable water wells in communities in Regions One, Eight and Nine.
Bids which opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) revealed that wells will be drilled at Warapoka and Kariako in Region One (estimated $51 million); Karaudarnau, Region Nine ($19 million); Red Hill and Hobodeiah, Region One ($55 million); and at Paramakatoi, Region Eight ($38 million).
The sum of $1.5 billion was approved for hinterland water supply under the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation in this year’s budget.
During the presentation of this year’s budget, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh disclosed that last year over 90 wells were completed along with improvements to water distribution systems in the hinterland in areas such as Kumaka, Kato, and Aishalton.
In 2026, he noted that the government will provide access to water to over 37,000 hinterland residents through key interventions such as construction of new wells and water distribution systems, and deploying solar PV systems to enhance reliability and reduce operating cost.
“Procure and install electromechanical components and critical spares to ensure operational reliability and long-term sustainability of existing systems. Procure and install water treatment systems to address high iron content and salinity across hinterland townships and villages,” he explained.
