(Kaieteur News) – Ranks of the Guyana Police Force on Thursday carried out a large-scale cannabis eradication exercise at Yaruni Bend, Linden, along the Upper Demerara River, uncovering extensive cultivation and processing operations. The joint operation, which ran from 05:00 hrs to 14:10 hrs on February 5, 2026, led to the discovery of two cannabis farms spanning approximately eight acres. Police found an estimated 53,000 suspected cannabis plants, ranging from two to six feet in height.
Further checks led to the discovery of two makeshift camps and five drying areas containing a combined total of approximately eight hundred (800) pounds of dried cannabis. The suspected cannabis plants, dried cannabis, makeshift camps and drying areas were destroyed by fire. No arrests have been made and the exercise was conducted without incident.
The estimated street value of the narcotics destroyed is as follows:
Cannabis plants – $17,956,400 GYD
Dried cannabis – $326,586,240 GYD
Total narcotics destroyed – $344,542,640 GYD
