(Kaieteur News) – Representatives and supporters of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party will engage in protest action to register their concerns surrounding the delayed election of the Regional Chairman for Region 10.
The planned picketing exercise will take place from January 28 to January 30, 2026, according to a flyer released by WIN Councillor Mark Goring. The protest action comes months after the party secured the most votes in the regional at the September 1, 2025 election.
The initial Regional Democratic Council election ended in a 9-9 tie between WIN and APNU nominees. The 18 councilors were sworn in October 10, 2025. However instead of moving to the second round of voting as stipulated in the law, the Regional Executive Officer (REO ) and clerk of council, Dwight John subsequently suspended the process, referring the matter to Minister Manickchand, who later clarified she has no role in selecting the chair and hoping the process is completed.
Since then WIN’s leader, Azruddin Mohamed has been calling for the election of the Chair in Region 10 a district traditionally dominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R). For their part, APNU’s Region 10 councillors in a statement last week expressed readiness to participate once the election is convened. They said, “We respectfully state that we are fully prepared and willing to participate in an election once it is convened, and we hope that this is done at the earliest opportunity. We remain committed to the democratic process and to operate within the framework of the law to ensure this matter is brought to a timely and orderly conclusion.”
