(Kaieteur News) – A 28-year-old labourer is currently in police custody assisting with investigations into a fatal accident that claimed the life of 33-year-old Jason Bhojedat on Sunday night along the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Guyana Police Force released details surrounding the accident, which resulted in the death of Bhojedat, a Distillery Plant Manager at Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and a resident of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
The accident occurred around 23:30 hrs and involved a minibus, BAK 8702, which was driven by Bhojedat, and a motor car, PKK 6633, driven by the 28-year-old labourer.
Police investigations revealed that the motor car was travelling south along the eastern driving lane at a fast rate and was following closely behind the minibus. While attempting to overtake the minibus, the motor car collided with its right rear. As a result of the impact, the minibus struck a light pole, overturned several times, and came to a stop on the western parapet. “Bhojedat was flung from the vehicle and fell onto the roadway in an unconscious state,” police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was later transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Additionally, a 31-year-old man of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, who was a passenger in the minibus, sustained multiple injuries. Both he and the driver of the motor car were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they received medical treatment and were subsequently discharged. The motor car driver was later arrested and taken in custody. However, police noted that a breathalyzer test was not administered to the driver due to injuries to his mouth, for which he received stitches.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Kaieteur News reported that news of Bhojedat’s death sent shockwaves, leaving friends, family, and loved ones devastated, with many taking to social media to share memories and express their grief. In a statement issued on Monday, DDL described Bhojedat as “a highly respected and valued member of the DDL family.”
DDL said that Bhojedat’s life, service, and legacy will always be honoured. Meanwhile, Saint Stanislaus College Assocaition, reflected on his life as a proud and active member of the institution. “A great mentor and an even greater human being, he touched countless lives with his warmth, guidance, and unwavering dedication. He was admired, respected, and loved by all who knew him, and his loss will be deeply felt across the SSC family and beyond,” the college stated.
Friends and family also took to social media to express shock and heartbreak. Bhojedat’s brother, Ashley Palmer Jr., wrote: “This is not the end you deserved, bro. RIP my little brother. I’ll ensure you get the justice you deserve.” Close friend Delon Moffett shared an emotional tribute, recalling their friendship since meeting at Saints in 2003. “You were my best friend since we met and will forever remain in my heart as one of the most genuine people I know. A true giant. A helpful and kind soul,” he said, recounting shared memories from school days to graduation.
