(Kaieteur News) – A 26- year- old Guyanese man died on Monday in Cayenne, after he was hospitalised for almost a week, reportedly following a gas cylinder explosion.
Gangaram Iyarsammy, of 75 Freeyard, Port Mourant, Corentyne, succumbed on Monday morning in the French Guiana capital.
Iyarsammy, who also was a cook and a boat builder, spent most of his time in Cayenne and Suriname, but was home for the Christmas holiday.
His mother, Koolcoomarie ‘Asha’, told Kaieteur News that her son returned to French Guiana last week Monday to renew some immigration documents.
“When he reached in Cayenne, I heard the boat just come in from the sea. He helped them boys empty out the load and so from the boat, but normally he does be the cook. He repair boats, he does make boats, big boats. When he don’t have boat work, he does work in the sea,” Asha told Kaieteur News.
According to information she received, Asha said her son was on the boat preparing a meal when the stove flared up in his face, burning him badly. She said she was also told that he panicked and plunged into the water to ease the pain.
“They said he hollered and said he get burn. They said they called the ambulance and the ambulance carried him to the hospital.”
These details were conveyed to her just around 20:00 hrs last Tuesday evening by the persons who took Iyarsammy to Cayenne. At the hospital, based on what was communicated to her, her son was given a ‘50/50’ chance of survival. According to reports, he had significant swelling to his face due to the burns. She said her family had arranged for someone over in that terrority to check on him at the hospital and provide updates.
The grieving mother said on Saturday the family was told there was “good news,” regarding her son’s chances of recovery. He was initially aided by an oxygen machine, but had begun breathing on his own. She said too, that she was in the process of securing travel documents to visit him on Friday, but was unable to do so. She received a call on Monday informing her that her son had passed away.
“We get the call in the morning, then the lady said the doctor said he had three heart attacks Sunday. Yesterday (Monday) morning was the last heart attack he had.
Iyarsammy was described as generous and considerate and with his many trades, was considered a ‘hustler’.
