Kaieteur Sports – The final round of the Women’s Blaze T20 tournament wraps up today with two exciting qualifier matches followed by a Leeward Islands/Barbados final under lights.
Guyana squandered their shot at possibly going to the final after a few losses, including their most recent at the hands of Barbados.
The soon to be ex-champs entered the competition looking good, as their bowlers were phenomenal compared to the batting which basically revolved around the two West Indies senior players; Captain Shamaine Campbell and Shabika Gajnabi.
Given the thrashing Guyana received a few rounds ago at the hands of the Trinidadian spin unit in Samara Ramnath, Karishama Ramharack, Brianna Harricharan and Ansia Mohammed primarily; today’s battle for the bronze could either be a repeat of the last encounter or a complete turnaround; as Guyana look to finish the tournament on a high note.
In the 5th place playoffs, Jamaica who had a mixed season will face an equally disappointing Windward Islands team.
Both teams despite experience have been terribly out-of-sorts and as a result will now play for virtually scraps.
Both Leewards and Barbados have had a tremendous run thus far, with the Bajans being the slightly better team.
Aaliyah Alleyne and her ladies have been exceptional in both departments for Barbados, but they will need to be cautious of the equally dangerous Leewards bowling unit.
Much like Alleyene, Leewards Captain Amanda Edwards has also been brilliant with bat and ball, while being backed by the in-form bowling attack consisting of Jahzara Claxton, Shawnisha Hector, Rozel Liburd, Qiana Joseph and Davronique Maynard; players who have been instrumental in getting their team to the final.
Tonight’s winner will be crowned new champs but more importantly will have the ideal momentum as they enter the Super50 and possibly look to end the season with a double. (Clifton Ross)
