(Kaieteur News) – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has called out fellow opposition party We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), stating that efforts to establish a unified Opposition in the National Assembly have been frustrated by WIN’s lack of meaningful engagement.
APNU Parliamentary Chief Whip Ganesh Mahipaul in a statement on Tuesday said that APNU made several attempts to engage WIN with the aim of forming a collective Opposition to hold the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration accountable.
“Acting on the instructions of APNU, I made several attempts to engage the We Invest in Nationhood party with a view of establishing a collective Opposition capable of holding the PPP/C Government accountable in the National Assembly. Regrettably, it has become clear to us that WIN has shown little or no genuine interest in such a collaborative approach,” Mahipaul said.
He said the most progress achieved was a telephone discussion during which there was agreement on a proposed agenda, including the composition of parliamentary committees, the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee and sectoral committees, the appointment of Shadow Ministers and other parliamentary matters. However, he noted that while WIN had undertaken to propose a date, time and venue for a meeting, no such engagement followed and months have since passed.
WIN holds the majority of opposition seats in the National Assembly, with 16 MPs, APNU has 12 seats, while Forward Movement Guyana (FMG) holds one.
In the absence of cooperation, APNU said it has proceeded independently with its parliamentary work, including the naming of Shadow Ministers, and has continued to carry out its constitutional responsibilities as an opposition. “Our Members of Parliament will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities as an Opposition. However, we cannot continue to waste valuable time pursuing engagements where there is no willingness to act together in a mature manner,” Mahipaul said.
Notably, Mahipaul said APNU remains open to working with other opposition forces but criticised WIN’s leader Azruddin Mohamed, suggesting his focus lies elsewhere.
He said, “The only thing Azruddin seems to be interested in right now is to protect himself from his legal jeopardy and selectively exposing some of the wrongdoings of the PPP/C that he was part and parcel of, and facilitated when the friendship was strong. In the circumstance he is best advised to continue to sing like a canary but also realise that being a MP requires lots more.”
Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed are currently battling an extradition request by the United States Government in the local courts. The businessmen duo were indicted on multiple charges in the U.S. They are accused of masterminding an elaborate fraud and money-laundering operation involving gold exports, customs fraud, bribery, and the evasion of millions in taxes and royalties owed to Guyana.
