Kaieteur Sports – After suffering a tough loss, defending champs Guyana find themselves in a do-or-die position as they face Barbados this afternoon, with all the chips on the table as they seek to keep their title amidst the current tension.
Guyana were exposed by the spin attack of the Trinidadians in the last game, resulting in their worse performance of the season thus far.
Barbados on the other hand have also suffered a rough loss in the last round to Leewards, making this encounter a must-win for both teams.
Despite good knocks from the likes of Shemaine Campbell, Shabika Gajnabi, Ashmini Munisar and Realanna Grimmond in previous rounds, Guyana will need to find an anchor with the bat heading into this battle.
Much will ride on the shoulders of the Bajan front-line batting order which features Absabi Callender, skipper Aaliyah Alleyene, Naijanni Cumberbatch, Trishan Holder, Eboni Brathwaite; all of whom have gotten decent starts but will need to lock in come today.
Bowling could likely win this game, given both team’s recent performance against spin, it is likely that Guyana’s big pair in Plaffianna Millington and Ashmini Munisar will have the lion’s share of the work cut out for them.
The veteran all-rounder Sheneta Grimmond will also play a huge role with the ball, but could also pull off a blinder at the top of the order when batting. Spinner Kaysia Schultz has also yet to click, but could play a crucial role today in a must win situation.
Cumberbatch bagged 5 wickets in the last game and could prove to be a handful alongside Shamilla Connell, Allison Gordon, Kelia Elliott and Shanika Bruce; who could easily put Barbados in a position to end the champs run this season.
The opening game will feature Trinidad and Tobago playing Jamaica, while Leewards and Windwards will face each other in the night match from 19:00h. (C. Ross)
