(Kaieteur News) – Sanjay Peter, a 29-year-old resident of Williamsburg, Corentyne, was on Tuesday handed a 23-year jail sentence for rape committed on a five-year-old boy back in 2018.
Imposing the sentence in the Berbice High Court, Justice Sandil Kissoon cited the gravity and discouraging rate of such offenses in society.
Peter was indicted on two counts: first count- sexual activity with a child family member, and the second count-rape of a child under 16.
Back in December, a 12-member jury found Peter, also known as ‘Akash’, guilty on both counts of the indictment, which summarised that between July 1 and August 5, 2018, he committed the act on a child, said to be a family member. He also knew that the boy was under 15 years old. Following his trial, sentencing was scheduled for January 6, 2026.
The state was represented by prosecutor Cicela Corbin, while attorney Kevin Morgan represented Peters.
Justice Kissoon also pointed out that individuals abusing the trust reposed in them by minors and taking advantage of them is a social scourge. He said the accused is unsuitable at this point for society.
Together with his jail term, Peters must also undergo rehabilitation services through the prison system, as ordered by the court.
