(Kaieteur News) – If there is an afterlife with even a small television set, Forbes Burnham must be leaning back, laughing loudly, and calling out to Cheddi Jagan, “Cheddi, come and look at this nah.” And poor Cheddi must be shaking his head in disbelief at what the PPP leadership has become.
Imagine that. A party that once wrapped itself in anti-imperialism, that thundered against American bullying, now cannot even clear its throat to condemn the United States for bombing Venezuela and effectively kidnapping its socialist president. Bombing a sovereign country. Snatching its leader.
And silence. Not even a polite cough. Burnham and Jagan would have been up in arms. Burnham would have called a press conference before the smoke cleared. Jagan would have written three statements, five pamphlets, and a small book by lunchtime. But today’s PPP leadership? Timid. Careful. Afraid. Looking over its shoulder to see what the Americans might think before opening its mouth. This is not foreign policy. This is foreign fear.
And if that was not bad enough, we now hear that the government is reportedly in talks with the Americans about accepting third-country prisoners. Prisoners. From elsewhere. From America’s problems. At one time, the Americans wanted to dump toxic waste in Guyana. The country said no, and rightly so. Today, instead of waste, they want to dump prisoners. Different package. Same disrespect. The most troubling part is not even the proposal. Big countries always try these things. The real problem is that we are entertaining the discussion at all. This is the kind of conversation that should have ended in the first minute, with a firm “No, thank you.” Instead, we are talking. Smiling. Listening. Nodding. Acting grateful to be considered.
Burnham must be laughing. Cheddi must be fuming. A party that once spoke the language of resistance now whispers the language of accommodation. Principles have been replaced by politeness. Courage has been replaced by calculation. This is what happens when leadership is weak and inexperienced. This is what happens when history is treated like decoration, not instruction. And this is why the old men, wherever they are, must be saying, “Is this really what we fought for?”
Talk half. Leff half.
