New Year, Same Old Promises (But We Wish Y’all Well Anyway)
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh when New Year come, everybody does turn philosopher, preacher, fitness coach and financial expert all in one. From midnight reach cockcrow, yuh hearing, “Dis is meh year!” Same people who swear last year was also dem year, but somehow de year run off wid dem money, dem waistline, and dem good intentions.
Dem boys seh as de fireworks buss and de rum cork pop, everybody quick to mek big plans. Gym full from January 1st to January 10th, then by January 15th is back to “ah does walk plenty at work.” Diet start strong—salad, water, positive vibes—until cook-up rice call yuh name and whisper, “Just one plate nah go kill yuh.”
But in all de joking aside, dem boys seh New Year is a serious thing too. Is a time fuh pause and remember dem who ain’t make it to see another calendar turn. Some chairs empty this year, some phones silent, some jokes missing a voice. So while we laughing and carrying on, is good fuh pour a lil extra drink, say a quiet prayer, and remember dem who walk wid we but now watching from higher ground.
Dem boys seh New Year resolutions does have one special power: dem does mek people lie to demself wid confidence. “Ah gon save money dis year,” seh man who already owe everybody from Parika to Port Mourant. “Ah gon stop procrastinating,” seh woman… tomorrow. Still, dem boys seh hope is a stubborn thing, and Guyanese is world champions at hope.
Dem boys seh we wish everybody success in whatever dem planning—new job, new business, new love, or just peace of mind. If yuh plan to mind yuh own business more in 2026, dem boys seh dat alone would improve de economy.
And finally, dem boys seh may dis New Year bring sense where sense short, patience where traffic long, and better behaviour where comment sections wild. If nothing else, may we survive another year fuh laugh at weself—because if we don’t, Guyana surely will.
