Two Guyanese men were arrested on Sunday in neighbouring Suriname, for smuggling and importing fireworks without a permit, as well as violating the Aliens Act.
The suspects are DR (33) and FY (58). The arrests were made during a joint river inspection by the Regional Assistance Team West (RBTW) and the Maritime Police on the Corentyne River in the Nickerie district on Sunday.
During the inspection, authorities found a total of 19 boxes of fireworks, which were immediately confiscated. The case has been transferred to the Regional West detectives for further investigation. In coordination with the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects have been remanded pending the investigation.
Meanwhile, the fireworks season has officially begun. Saturday marked the start of the permitted period for the individual sale and setting off of fireworks. A day later, Sunday, the first fireworks-related fatality of was registered in the country.
A 24-year-old man with an injury to his right eye was reported to the Emergency Department (ER) of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) around 10:00 PM. The injury was caused by an incense stick. The victim was treated and referred to an ophthalmologist, where he was scheduled to report again on Monday. (DWT Online)
