(Kaieteur News) – Christmas is one of those seasons that invites us to pause. Amid the lights, the music, the shopping lists, and the celebrations, there is a gentle call to slow down and reflect on what truly matters. Beyond the beautifully wrapped gifts and carefully planned outfits, Christmas is, at its core, about love. Love for God, love for one another, love for our environment, and love for ourselves.
As the year draws to a close, I often find myself reflecting not just on what I have accomplished, but on how I have shown up in the lives of others. Have I been present? Have I invested my energy wisely? Have I given love generously? These questions feel especially relevant during the Christmas season.
As we reflect during this time, many of us experience an emotional roller coaster. Joy, gratitude, longing, and quiet reflection often exist all at once. It brings to mind a quote I created that continues to guide me:
“Guard your emotional currency wisely; invest it in people and moments that enrich your soul, and never spend it where it’s not valued.”
Christmas reminds us that our emotional currency, our time, attention, kindness, and compassion, is one of the most valuable gifts we possess. While material gifts may fade, depreciate, or be forgotten, the way we make people feel can last a lifetime.
In a world that moves quickly and demands so much of us, being present has become one of the rarest and most meaningful gifts we can give. Sometimes the greatest present is simply our presence. Sitting at the table, listening without distraction, sharing a meal, or checking in on someone who may be struggling silently.
As families gather around Christmas meals, it is worth remembering that not everyone has abundance. If you have a little extra, consider sharing. Take a plate of food to a neighbor who may be unwell, elderly, or going through a difficult season. Invite someone who might otherwise be alone to share a meal. These simple acts of kindness reflect the true spirit of Christmas.
This season can also be bittersweet as we remember loved ones who are no longer with us. We honor their memories by carrying their love forward and holding space for gratitude, even in moments of loss.
Over the years, through the Sonia Noel Foundation, we have made it a tradition to give back during the Christmas season by hosting feeding programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. Each year, these moments remind me that love in action speaks louder than words. I cooked the pepperpot myself and served it with bread and coffee to those experiencing homelessness, offering the simple dignity of choice, coffee with milk or black. Sometimes, a smile and a genuine conversation become the most powerful gifts of all, affirming our shared humanity.
Christmas is also a sacred reminder of God’s love for humanity. The birth of Jesus represents hope, humility, and unconditional love. Scripture tells us,
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13
Love is not passive. It is active. It is seen in how we care for our environment, how we treat strangers, how we show up for our communities, and how we steward the blessings we have been given. Whether it is choosing more sustainable options, reducing waste, or being mindful of how we consume during the holidays, love for the environment is also an extension of gratitude.
Of course, Christmas is also a season of celebration, and fashion plays a joyful role in how we express ourselves. Clothing is more than fabric. It is storytelling. It is how we show up confidently at family gatherings, church services, festive lunches, and relaxed Boxing Day outings.
For the holiday season, think effortless elegance and comfort. A flowing dress in breathable fabric, a relaxed two-piece set, or a beautifully tailored casual look can take you from Christmas lunch to an evening walk with loved ones. Style does not have to be complicated. It simply needs to reflect who you are.
Beyond trends and silhouettes, one of the most powerful things you can wear this season is confidence. Confidence elevates every outfit. When inner beauty meets outer expression, the result is timeless. As you choose your holiday looks, remember that style begins from within.
Gift-giving is a cherished part of Christmas, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to rethink what we give and why. Many traditional gifts such as perfumes, gadgets, and novelty items are enjoyable but temporary. Over time, they fade, expire, or are replaced.
What if we also gave gifts that enrich lives long after the season ends?
One of the most meaningful gifts you can offer is the gift of growth. A book that inspires, a course that builds confidence, or a programme that helps someone discover their purpose are gifts that appreciate in value. They plant seeds that can transform mindsets, habits, and futures.
Programs focused on personal development, confidence-building, and intentional living offer recipients tools they can carry into the new year and beyond. When you give a gift that helps someone believe in themselves, you are giving a gift that keeps giving.
As we approach a new year, many people reflect on who they want to become. Confidence is often the missing link between intention and action. Confidence is not about perfection. It is about believing that you are worthy, capable, and enough.
This season invites us to clothe ourselves not only in beautiful garments, but also in compassion, gratitude, and courage. When inner confidence aligns with outer presentation, we show up differently in our families, our workplaces, and our communities.
Christmas is a celebration of life itself. It reminds us that we are better together, that love multiplies when shared, and that joy grows when extended beyond ourselves. Whether you are attending a festive gathering, walking along the seawall, heading to a Boxing Day outing, or simply enjoying quiet moments at home, remember that the season is not about perfection. It is about connection.
As you celebrate, take a moment to check on someone who may be struggling. Share food where you can. Give generously, love deeply, and invest your emotional currency wisely, because how we give of ourselves truly matters.
Beyond the runway, beyond the gifts, beyond the noise, may this Christmas be one filled with presence, purpose, gratitude, faith, and love.
And as we step into a new year, may we continue this beautiful journey called life Beyond the Runway.
