Dec 18, 2025 Letters
Dear Santa,
I am writing you this letter because I am badly in need of something special for Christmas. I paid for a product-a population census- nearly four years ago and I have not gotten it yet. But I need it urgently now. So many have died and they do not know what they left behind. Is the population still 750,000 or is it one million? Do we have as many migrants as native Guyanese in the country? The President has been harassing contractors to complete contracts on time but after four years his own government cannot deliver my census report.
By next year, half the decade would be gone, and I would be none the wiser about many important things in Guyana. I know that persons contacted representatives of the seller who said that they were aware of the order but repeatedly could not say when it would be delivered. Santa, please understand that I need this product because life is becoming increasingly difficult and I want to make some investment decisions to make my life easier.
Friends tell me that they too would be well served by having the census report. Christmas is a festive time and is celebrated with lots of lights and carols. But I am groping in the dark because I do not know market size. For me to invest and sing joyously to fellow Guyanese, I need to know the population of Guyana and to get an idea of its distribution. I need to know average household size and income levels. The cost-of-living would not come down if I did not know how much to produce and where to compete. Santa, this information is known to the government and its friends, but it is not available to my friends and me who want the cost-of-living to come down and want to do something to make it happen. I know with certainty that there will be no snow in Guyana. I do not have the same confidence about the building or housing stock in Guyana. Is the housing market saturated or is it in short supply? The census would tell me the occupancy or vacancy rates and even though the information is dated, I can use it to forecast future trends. It would become easier for me to decide if I should invest in the hotel industry or other parts of the hospitality industry? What about investing in the construction and transportation industries? I would be groping in the dark about these and other market opportunities without the census.
As much as I am an adult and I should be unafraid of the dark, I cannot afford to take that chance with my money. So, Santa, I need the census. Also, I know that you are in Guyana from the good times many are already having in the fastest growing economy in the world. From your jolly laugh, I know that you are not missing out on the fun. Notwithstanding the merriment, please see if you could find time to bring my census report and drop it off at the house or slip it under the Christmas tree if possible. If you are having too much fun and don’t want to miss any of it, you could post it online and I would be just as satisfied. Santa, I have been an awfully good person. So, please see what you can do to help my friends and me to enjoy the season. In anticipation of celebrating a
Happy Christmas,
Regards
