(Kaieteur News) –The Amerindian Peoples Association (APA) on Thursday held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) where new Executive Committee members were elected.
The general meeting was held at the Ramada Hotel and oversaw by Ms. Winneth Collymore, the Regional Co-operatives Development Officer in the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning. Also in attendance were Officers from the Co-operatives and Friendly Societies Department who would ensure compliance and regulatory adherence as mandated by the Friendly Societies Act, Chapter 36:04.

According to a statement from APA, the new executive committee will oversee its work for the next year. Mr. Lemmel Thomas of Kamarang, Upper Mazaruni District, was elected president while Mr. Mario Hastings, will serve as vice-president.
The other members are Secretary – Toshao David Wilson of Akawini; Treasurer – Toshao of Hobodia, Mabaruma Sub-Region, Mr Reynold Hudson; Assistant Secretary – Mr. John Campbell of Santa Cruz, Moruca Sub-Region; Assistant Treasurer – Mr. Allan Torres of Santa Rosa; Women’s Representative-Toshao Alma Marshall of Kamarang; Youth Representative – Crystal Atkinson also of Santa Rosa Village; and Trustees – Dmitri Nicholson and Kim Fredericks.
Further, those persons elected as regional representatives are Genevieve Vansluytman of Moruca; Roxanne Skeete of Mabaruma; Claude Benjamin of Matarkai; Karolin Thomas of Pomeroon; Joseph Russell of Essequibo Coast; Ronald Joseph of Middle Mazaruni; Clyde Henry of Upper Mazaruni; Ramadhin Ruddy of Upper Cuyuni; Charles Peter of North Pakaraimas; Carlos Marco of Potaro; James Davis of South Pakaraimas; Fredrick Stephen of Central Rupununi; Ronald Ignatius of South Central Rupununi; and Patrick Gomes of Deep South Rupununi.
In addition to electing office bearers, the APA stated that key achievements of the AGM included the approval of the minutes from the 2024 meeting, the review and adoption of the 2024 annual report and financial statements, and the approval of the APA’s proposed work plan for the upcoming year.
The association noted that its general meeting remains a cornerstone of its efforts to ensure transparency, accountability, and strategic planning.
Additionally, the body said that ahead of the general meeting, it held its Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) between December 9 – 10, 2025, bringing together its members from across Guyana.
“Discussions focused on key issues, including land rights, environmental sustainability, and strengthening Indigenous cultural heritage. Participants reviewed progress on ongoing initiatives, assessed challenges, and explored strategies to enhance advocacy at both national and international levels,” APA noted.
Kaieteur News understands that the OGM laid the groundwork for the AGM, reinforcing the APA’s mission to protect the rights, lands, and traditions of Indigenous Peoples.
“As a rights-based organisation, the APA remains committed to fostering solidarity among Indigenous communities and ensuring their voices are central to national development conversations,” the statement related.
