Man who robbed Home Affairs Ministry remanded to prison

(Kaieteur News) – A 48-year-old man was on Wednesday remanded to prison for breaking into the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and stealing from three persons.

Police in a statement said the man, identified as Neil Medas called ‘Shoulders’ was arrested on Monday and made his first court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Medas appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty where he was charged with five counts of break-and-enter and larceny. He pleaded guilty to all the charges and was remanded.

The matters were adjourned to January 7, 2026.

Medas broke into the ministry between 03:00h and 04:55h on Monday. Police reported that several electronic devices, including laptop computers, electronic tablets and digital cameras along with a quantity of personal property belonging to a staff member, were reported stolen from the building.

“Investigations revealed that sections of the ministry’s middle and lower flats were ransacked. An eastern-side washroom window on the lower flat was found open, indicating the point through which entry was believed to have been gained,” the police explained.

In a separate statement, the Home Affairs ministry related that the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage showed the suspect entering the building by pulling open the eastern washroom window and later moving about the middle flat carrying a black, bulky travelling bag.

The footage showed the suspect exited the building via a fire escape on the northern side, before scaling the eastern fence with the bag and proceeding east along Croal Street.

Several stolen items were found in his possession.
