(Kaieteur News) – The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (GMCC) has announced that the La Penitence Market will undergo rehabilitative works. The Mayor and City Council via a Facebook post said that it met with the representatives of E&A Consultancy, which was awarded the contract to rehabilitate the market, discuss developmental works.
During discussions with Mr. Anton Azore, a civil engineer attached to E&A Consultancy, the rehabilitative works will be completed between 18 to 24 months.
“He explained that due to the drainage works, it was necessary for the internal design to be restructured. However, the external design of the market will also be rehabilitated, but original design maintained. He opined that the plan is to provide suitable shelter for the current stallholders and the vendors who ply their trade on the roadways,” GMCC reported.
Importantly, the contractor assured that the vendors would not be displaced during this developmental works while noting that the works aim at alleviating flooding within the market by raising the existing level.

City Mayor Alfred Mentore, and councillors and other representatives at La Penitence Market on Tuesday.
Mayor of Georgetown, Mr. Alfred Mentore said he was satisfied with the proposed works while indicating the Council’s willingness to work with the consultant for the betterment of the stallholders and vendors.
“Guyana is now an oil producing country, and as such, systems implemented should reflect that development and futuristic approaches to city and nation building,” the mayor said.
Meanwhile, in an effort to ensure that facilities and systems are improved, the City Council said it will continue to communicate with the consultant, vendors, and stallholders as works progress.
The La Penitence Market has been in a deplorable state for several years. In October 2023, vendors complained bitterly about the state of the market noting that the roof was leaking badly and that the market was flooding every time it rains.
