(Kaieteur News) – A post-mortem examination on the body of 38-year-old Chandini “Savi” Persaud, who was found on the Stewartville seawall on November 16, revealed that she died by drowning.
Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Siwnarine, told this publication that the examination was conducted on Wednesday and revealed drowning as the cause of death. “PME results stated drowning,” he said.
Persaud, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was reported missing at the Leonora Police Station on Tuesday, November 18, after relatives said she had not been seen since November 14.
According to police, ranks responded on November 16 to a report of a body lying along the Stewartville seawall. The scene was processed, and the unidentified remains were taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home for identification and a post-mortem. On Thursday, November 20, a friend of Persaud visited the funeral home and positively identified her by a distinctive tattoo.
Relatives described Persaud as someone who struggled with mental illness. They said she lived alone and was employed as a teacher at a private school. A close friend also confirmed that Persaud had been experiencing “bouts of depression.”
“Savi struggled with her mental health and lately her mental health hasn’t been in the best state. She’s been having bad thoughts… The condition she was last seen in was known to be fragile, but she knew herself,” a woman identifying herself as Persaud’s friend wrote in a Facebook post.
With the PME confirming drowning as cause of death, the investigation into the matter has been concluded, the commander revealed.
