(Kaieteur News) – A 33-year-old IT technician has been sentenced to 24 months in prison and fined $2.5 million after being found guilty of publishing explicit images of his ex-girlfriend and repeatedly harassing her for more than a year.
The sentence was handed down on Monday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Orinthia Schmidt. The man, identified as Jeremy Smith, who resides at Lot 139 Meadow Brook Gardens, Georgetown, faced cybercrime charges stemming from allegations that between March 11 and May 6, 2023, he unlawfully obtained intimate electronic data, including photos and videos, from his ex-girlfriend’s WhatsApp messages.
Additionally, between May 27 and July 16, 2024, Smith is accused of publishing this content through a computer system, causing emotional distress to the young woman. His matter was first heard before Magistrate Clive Nurse on July 22, 2024 when he pleaded not guilty to all charges. Smith also had an additional charge at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court for breaching protection order against the woman. He was represented by attorney Darren Wade.
The court heard that the man and the woman had been in an on-and-off relationship for over a year and a half, but the woman ended the relationship after what she described as Smith’s abusive behaviour. In December 2022, she obtained a restraining order against him, which he repeatedly breached. Throughout the ordeal, Smith allegedly harassed her continuously and had damaged some of her personal belongings. Fearing for her life, the woman said she had hoped that justice would eventually prevail. After what she described as a long and exhausting legal process, the woman said she is relieved to finally see her ex-partner being held accountable and placed behind bars.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, she expressed mixed emotions but gratitude for the outcome. “When it comes to the decision, I honestly wanted it to be more, but I am so grateful and satisfied. I endured stress and humiliation because those photos were posted on the internet and various social media platforms. It will leave a digital footprint that will never go away, but I am satisfied, justice has been served despite it taking almost two years,” she said.
She also offered words of encouragement to other women facing similar abuse. “I would encourage young women in the same position not to give up. Suicide is never an option; it’s never an answer. Just keep praying, trusting God, and don’t give up on the court case no matter how tiring and stressful it can be. Keep showing up, keep going to court,” she advised.
The woman had previously shared with this publication the extent of Smith’s harassment. She recounted that even while he was facing legal action, the abuse escalated. “He created a Telegram group and posted my photos, and he also uploaded a video he recorded without my knowledge using a hidden camera of us having sex,” she said. She further recalled incidents where he appeared at her home unannounced after being granted bail and threatened her.
