Dear Editor,
Developments with regard to Venezuela have taken a rapid turn including the threat of war on our borders. If we are to accept the assessment of the foreign minister of Venezuela, Ivan Gil, it is the neighbours of Venezuela including Guyana that will be affected more than Venezuela itself.
So we can expect that the problems from the sindicato gangs that have been plaguing our frontier residents and businesses, and the violence that has cost the life of a young citizen of the city in a bomb explosion to move to a whole new level.
It is at the interface with corruption and law-breaking and law influencing that this becomes of greatest concern to TIGI. From some of the information coming to our attention, it is apparent that there are unwholesome relationships with Venezuela of a criminal nature that have developed over the years. Some of these relationships have burst into the open from time to time. For example, the polar bear scam which investigation came to an abrupt end when the evasion of customs duties was traced to persons with high-level contacts and the island of Margarita.
In all these circumstances, we do not feel that the government has earned the right to maintain its stinginess with information to the public. The population census continues to be a secret even though completed 2 years ago.
We see the investigation into this bombing completed with an alacrity that was sadly lacking in the case of another 11-year-old young lady who died under circumstances that warranted similar urgency. This suggests that there are factors which are at work in our law enforcement agencies which can produce different rates of urgency. We wonder what else there can be in terms of the level of fairness.
This difference in rate of investigation makes one wonder about the insistence of the government on placing certain officials whose loyalty to the governing party in key positions of the administration of justice is well-known.
In the case of the Tuschen drowning, there were reports that politically connected persons were involved and were being protected. We do not find it unlikely that there are also persons involved in this crime who are also being protected.
The issuance of this statement is a step in sharing our concerns to our fellow citizens in hopes of their being aware of the level of exposure we face when our government operates in so much political favoritism and secrecy and with the hope that they will be more alert to the perils we face.
TIGI

Kaieteur News – There is, in every small society, a theatre of justice—a place where the public gathers not merely to witness proceedings but to measure the conduct of those who govern them.
