Kaieteur Sports – Some eight teams are set to play in the New Amsterdam Town day Inter-Ward eight-a-side football competition in New Amsterdam.

The football competition, which is organised by the New Amsterdam Town Day Committee, is being sponsored by Ansa Mc Al and other entities. It is being staged as part of the Town’s 134th anniversary celebrations under the patronage of Mayor Wainwright McIntosh.

The competition will be played under lights at the Scot’s Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road in New Amsterdam.

The knockout competition will see matches being played for one hour each.

The teams are Kildonan, East Canje, North New Amsterdam, Fyrish, Fort Ordnance, Manchester, South New Amsterdam and East Bank Berbice.

The fixtures are Kildonan of Corentyne versus East Canje; North New Amsterdam versus Fyrish of Corentyne; Forth Ordnance in East Canje versus Manchester of Corentyne and South New Amsterdam matching skills with East Bank Berbice.

The semifinal will see the winner of one versus the winner of two while the winner of three will match skills with the winner of four.

Mayor McIntosh is expected to kick off the ball to start the tournament. According to Mc Intosh they have included a number of teams from outside the township because they want as many teams involved. He also stated that they usually receive support from patrons outside of the municipality, especially from East and West Canje, East Bank Berbice and Corentyne. (Samuel Whyte)
