(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Saturday urged all citizens, and residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious persons, activities or movements observed within their communities, or public spaces.
“Members of the public are reminded, that maintaining safety and security is a shared responsibility, and early reporting of suspicious behavior can help prevent unlawful acts, and ensure the wellbeing of all,” the police said in a statement.
The statement follows last Sunday’s bombing of the Mobil Service Station located on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown which left a six-year-old girl dead and several others injured.
The main suspect in last Sunday deadly gas station bombing, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo, has since confessed to travelling from Venezuela to Guyana illegally with the explosive device, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed.
Peodomo reportedly confessed to the crime telling investigators that he arrived in Guyana at around 08:00h on Sunday via boat, hours before the deadly bombing. The Venezuelan national and eight other accomplices including four Guyanese have been arrested.
Blanhum told reporters at a press conference held at the Ministry of Home Affairs that Peodomo and a Venezuelan accomplice [who entered Guyana illegally with him] have some affiliation with a “gang in Venezuela known as ‘R’” which is linked to the Sindicato gang.
On Friday, reports surfaced of a Spanish-speaking man acting suspiciously within the compound of the Georgetown Supreme Court. According to Nightly News at around 11:35 hours, the man who was dressed in blue pants, a blue jersey, white Nike boots, a cream cap, black shades, and carrying a cream haversack with black and white straps, approached the South Road entrance leading to the Deeds Registry.
The news report said that the man was stopped and questioned by a police constable, to whom he stated that he was “there to check out the court.” The man was allowed entry and sat outside the Deeds Registry office.
Approximately five minutes later, security from a private firm approached the man and inquired about his presence. Upon being questioned, the man immediately got up and exited the compound through the Charlotte Street entrance.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police at around 13:00 hours.
Meanwhile, the GPF is asking persons who notice “suspicious individuals loitering, acting unusually, or behaving in a manner that raises concern, to immediately contact the Force Control (24-Hour Operations Centre) on 227-1149, 227-1611, 225-8196, 225-6940, 226-1389, 227-1148, 227-2128, 227-1141 or the Emergency Hotline 911 for immediate assistance.”
The police assures that all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
