(Kaieteur News) – An irate man went on a smashing spree Sunday morning, shattering the glass doors and windows of the Republic and Scotia Banks in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to information provided, several of the ATMs were down, and the man, who is yet to be identified, took out his frustration on the properties.
One eyewitness told Kaieteur News that indeed the ATMs were not functioning from around Saturday evening.
“The guy came to the (Republic) bank (I assume with the intention of doing a withdrawal). The ATMs were down since probably last night because I was there this morning, and all they were giving out were receipts with no cash,” Carl Alleyne stated.
The man, he said, “armed himself with a hammer and began to whack the machines and then proceeded to whack the glass to the front of the building. The same was done at Scotiabank.”
Commander of Region Six, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed to this publication that the police received complaints from the two banking institutions of the incident.
When contacted, the commander said that a male of African descent rode up on a motorcycle to Republic Bank at Lot 16 Strand, New Amsterdam, where after entering the ATM, he apparently had difficulties with the machine.
He reportedly then took out an object he carried with him and began smashing the glass windows of the facility, as well as the machine. Subsequently, he ventured to the nearby Scotia Bank facility, where he shattered the glass there as well. The commander told Kaieteur News that the machine there was untouched.
Bacchus said the police are on the hunt for the perpetrator.
