(Kaieteur News) – Several persons have been arrested by the law enforcement and investigation division officers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Friday following the seizure of a large quantity of firecrackers and other un-customed goods at the Stabroek Market, Georgetown and Leonora Market, West Coast Demerara.
According to a press release issued by the GRA, several persons are assisting the Customs Law Enforcement officers with the ongoing investigations.
Friday’s seizure follows an operation two days ago in the Berbice area, where another large quantity of firecrackers was seized, persons arrested, and handed over to the police.
In keeping with protocol, all such explosive items (the said firecrackers) were handed over to the police for eventual disposal and the relevant charges to be made.
GRA restated its “zero tolerance” approach against smuggling and other illegal activities and “takes this opportunity to encourage persons involved in such activities to cease and desist therefrom, and bring themselves into compliance with the nation’s Tax, Trade and Border laws.”
The Authority said that failure to comply may result in charges being instituted for breach of the provisions of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01 or in accordance with the laws administered therein. Persons can report smuggling activities by calling 227-6060 ext. 3201, 3204, 3205, 3208 or 3216.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force in a statement on Friday, said ranks from the Leonora Police Station, conducted searches for explosives and firecrackers at the Leonora Market and on the stall belonging to 45-year-old Fizul Sanichar, a vendor of Zeelught, East Bank Essequibo where several explosives were found.
Among the explosives are 188 packs of five shot Pegasus fireworks, 600 packs of magic shots 30 each, 182 packs of magic shots 20 each, 25 packs of crackling waves, 3 packs of dream team fireworks, 36 8 ball Roman candle and 10 packs of small Roman candle.
