Dear Editor,
The no-nonsense, upbraiding of officials on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) traffic woes rings similar to the pre-dawn blistering meted out to officials for contracts lagging and poor quality of work, earlier. The riot act was read then, it was read again, now.
It has to be wondered if some of the players were involved in the pre-dawn no-mincing of words confab, yet it seems nothing new was learned.
The traffic woes on the East Bank (EB) corridor did not materialise suddenly. It was there building all the time. The officials involved in the road building should have seen this and put measure in place to alleviate the situation.
Instead, it was allowed to fester. Now, the micro-managing relief measures rolled out to ease the EBD woes to commuters, even employing river services to get persons to the Airport, has to be seen as reactive and does nothing to dispel the notion that road building and attendant traffic management, closely intertwined, are sciences meant to bring order and organisation where disorder and disorganisation exist.
This embarrassing episode must never be repeated.

Question: Are there any Traffic Engineers employed by the Ministry of Public Works. Are there any in the country. Why are they no scholarship offers, since road infrastructure is such a big part of government’s “transformative development”?
Also, why in havens name are we building two lanes each way highways, through villages and towns, leaving no space for expansion, not to mention the danger when we expect massive development?
