(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill is calling on Guyanese to be responsible when driving on the roadways.
The minister’s call came in light of an accident involving a mini-bus which occurred on the eastern approach road to the new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge on Monday morning.
According to Minister Edghill, the accident on the median on the road approach also damaged two solar lights.
He said while it is clear persons who damage public infrastructure will have to pay, what is most important is saving one’s life. The driver of the minibus has reportedly lost one of his legs as a result of the accident.
Edghill said that “mini-buses are providing a public service to people; they have to slow down.”
The US$262 million river crossing linking Regions Three and Four was commissioned a week ago by President Irfaan Ali.
Following the commissioning, Minister Edghill and Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent, Mahendra Singh cautioned drivers to exercise patience, consideration and responsible behaviour when accessing the new bridge.

I knew it, I said so, how long before a vehicle involved in an accident on
the Bridge ? Though not properly ‘on the bridge” the approach”, the leads
that eventually cause you to enter the bridge, is part, parcel of the Jagdeo’s
Bridge. This must make Jagdeo mad, very mad.
Thank God, the driver reportedly only lost a leg. Still have one remaining.
Better a leg than HIS LIFE.
