…as Education Ministry raises bar on leadership and accountability

(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education on Tuesday honoured 62 schools for achieving Compliance Excellence under its School Leadership and Management (Part One) standards, a major milestone in the drive to strengthen accountability and governance in the nation’s education system.

Hosted by the National Education Inspectorate Unit, the inaugural Compliance Award Ceremony was held at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) auditorium, recognising schools from Regions Three, Four, Six, Ten, and Georgetown for meeting key criteria in leadership, management, and institutional efficiency during the 2024–2025 academic year.

According to a Ministry of Education press release, across the country, inspectors visited 328 schools. Region Two emerged as the most compliant, with 63 schools meeting all required standards. The Ministry announced that a separate award ceremony will be held in that region to honour their outstanding performance.

Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration), Ms. Tiffany Harvey, commended the awardees for demonstrating commitment to high standards in school management. Assistant Chief Education Officer (Inspectorate), Ms. Renita Barnes, applauded the educators and administrators who embraced the Ministry’s vision of stronger systems and better outcomes. “This initiative reflects our shared mission of ensuring every school is well-managed, well-led, and focused on results,” Ms. Barnes said. “We are not only measuring compliance; we are fostering growth and accountability across the sector.”

NCERD Director, Ms. Oma Ramdin, stressed that compliance is more than a checklist — it’s the backbone of national education progress. “When schools function efficiently and meet the standards set out by the Ministry, they create a foundation for innovation and excellence,” she stated. “The progress we are seeing is a testament to what can be achieved through strong leadership and teamwork.”

The Ministry of Education extends congratulations to all the awardees and reaffirms its commitment to building a culture of accountability and excellence across Guyana’s education system. The National Education Inspectorate Unit plays a key role in ensuring quality assurance and continuous improvement within the education sector. By monitoring and assessing schools’ performance in leadership, management, and teaching standards, it helps strengthen the overall effectiveness of Guyana’s education system, ensuring that every child has access to a safe, well-managed, and high-performing learning environment.
