Dear Editor,
The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) of the Guyana Police Force continues to fail this nation. What should be a modern, professional arm of the Force has instead become a source of embarrassment, frustration, and public distrust.
Time and again, the CCU issues statements that are incomplete, inaccurate, or poorly structured eroding confidence in the very institution it is meant to represent.
Take for instance the Adriana Younge matter. The CCU mishandled this release so badly that instead of offering clarity and reassurance, it created confusion and outrage. There was no sense of accuracy, compassion, or timeliness only a rushed, careless approach that showed total disregard for the public’s need to be properly informed.
This was not an isolated case. Several recent releases have misinformed the nation:
What makes this decline worse is that the CCU is not understaffed. The head of the Unit is assisted by a senior police superintendent, yet the quality of work continues to drop. This shows the problem is leadership, not resources.
Even more embarrassing is that Radio Eve-Leary, a separate entity with fewer resources, consistently produces clearer, more professional, and more engaging content. How can the official communications arm of the Force, with more people and direct authority, be outperformed by a radio station operating on less?
The Guyana Police Force cannot claim to be modern and transparent while tolerating a communications department so outdated, careless, and counterproductive. Unless the current leadership of the CCU is held accountable the cycle of misinformation, mismanagement, and national embarrassment will continue.
The Guyana Police Force deserves better. The people of Guyana deserve better.
Regards,
S. D. T. Fordyce
