(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar on Friday commissioned two new pilot vessels for the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD).
According to a release from the ministry, the new ECO50 pilot vessels named Haiama and Haiakwa are valued at approximately US$5 million.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, which was held at the Transport and Harbours Good Wharf, Water Street, Georgetown, Minister Indar stated that the expansion of MARAD’s fleet is crucial in Guyana’s quest to become a regional hub for shipping and trade.
The minister also highlighted the need for more trained pilots to support the growing maritime industry. During his remarks, he also noted the importance of safety on the waterways and encouraged pilots and engineers to maintain the vessels properly to ensure their longevity.
According to the ministry, “This move is aimed at strengthening the nation’s maritime capacity to meet the growing demands of the oil and gas industry.”
The new state-of-the-art vessels bring MARAD’S fleet to five, showcasing a modern, efficient and environmentally responsible approach to maritime operations in the country, the ministry said.
“The PPP/C Government is committed to strengthening the maritime sector’s legislative framework with the establishment of a Port Authority Act to manage, regulate, and develop ports in Guyana,” the release stated.
Kaieteur News understands that the vessels were built by French company, OCEA.
