Georgetown City Council establishes partnership with Miami Dade County
Kaieteur News – The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown has established a sister city partnership agreement with the Miami Dade County, Florida, USA.
The agreement was signed on September 29th 2025, in Miami, Florida on the sidelines of the 27th inter-American Conference of Mayors and Local Authorities, by city mayor, Alfred Mentore and Miami-Dade Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava.

Mayor Mentore announced on Tuesday the formal establishment of the sister city relationship between Georgetown, Guyana and Miami-Dade Florida, USA.
He said the agreement strengthens ties between Georgetown and the Miami Dade County in Florida.
The partnership marks a significant milestone in fostering international collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic opportunities between the two vibrant cities. It is the 23rd sister city signing of the Miami – Dade County.
The ceremony, attended by visiting municipalities, local dignitaries, business leaders, and community representatives from both regions and Latin America, symbolises a commitment to mutual growth and shared prosperity. As coastal cities with rich multicultural heritages, Georgetown and Miami are poised to leverage their unique strengths in trade, tourism, and innovation, the city council said in a release.
Under the sister city protocol, the cities will cooperate in key areas including; economic development and trade, cultural and educational exchanges: collaborating on eco-tourism projects, climate resilience strategies, and urban planning and sharing best practices in healthcare access, disaster preparedness, solid waste, tax collection and community wellness programmes to enhance residents’ quality of life.
“This partnership is more than a formality – it’s a bridge of friendship and opportunity that connects our historic capital to the dynamic gateway of the Americas,” said Mayor Alfred Mentore.” Georgetown’s resilient spirit and Miami’s innovative energy will inspire collaborative solutions that uplift our people, drive economic progress, and preserve our shared cultural tapestry for generations to come.”
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, of Miami-Dade Florida County echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Miami is thrilled to welcome Georgetown as our newest sister city. With deep-rooted ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, this alliance opens doors for cultural enrichment, trade expansion, and sustainable growth. Together, we’ll build stronger communities and brighter futures.”
The sister city programme is facilitated through Miami-Dade County’s longstanding international diplomacy efforts, and aligns with global goals for citizen-to-citizen connections.
Initial activities under the agreement include a joint cultural festival planned for 2026 and business matchmaking sessions focused on Guyana’s emerging green energy sector.
