Dear Editor,
I have noted with great concern the continuing carnage on the roads of Guyana.ย Whilst the evidence shows that this situation exists countrywide, it is clear that the Linden Soesdyke Highway has become a death trap and therefore should be given urgent attention.
As a former Traffic Officer (Traffic Chief), I would like to make a suggestion with regards to the Linden Soesdyke Highway. The Guyana Police force should immediately establish a โHighway Safety Unitโ.
This unit must be based on the highway and be equipped with sufficient resources, manpower, vehicles, safety equipment, etc. and operate on a 24-hour basis. At all times there must be a minimum of two vehicles well equipped with traffic cones, highly reflective warning signs, portable electronic warning signs, etc. travelling in opposite directions (Criss crossing).
The main purpose of the highway patrol must be to identify potential dangers i.e.ย broken-down vehicles, erosion, loose surface, water lodged on the road surface, etc. and ensure that adequate warning signs are put in place at a reasonable distance from the potential danger.
I am sure that this measure, if immediately implemented, can have a significant impact on the safety of this important artery.
Yours truly,
Paul Slowe CCH, DSM, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Retired). Former Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

That suggestion is not the answer solving country wide problem.
It is the mentality of EXCESSIVE SPEED by many without regards for
safety, whilst under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, or not.
Diminished mentality under influence causes a slow reaction in any
situation.
An operator under normal circumstances MUST be able to control a 5000
pound vehicle(car) on the roads that are in good condition. Excessive
Speed is NOT NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
