Kaieteur News – Two men were killed and another in critical condition following an accident at Loo Creek on the Linden Soesdyke Highway early Thursday morning.
Dead are: Da Tai Lei, a 54-year-old Chinese National from Lethem and Edward Singh, an 87-year-old man from Lethem.
In a statement police said the accident involved a truck GAH 5391, driven by Liston Marcus, a 31-year-old from Ruimveldt Georgetown; and a motor pickup #PAE 6499, driven by Da Tai Lei.
In the pick-up were: Wen Wu Lei, a 41-year-old Chinese National, and Edward Singh. It was disclosed during enquiries that the truck was parked unattended by the driver at about 22:50hrs after it had allegedly developed mechanical problems. It was left on the western side of the Linden Soesdyke Highway at Loo Creek facing north.
Police said that the vehicle had no reflector or any other warning appliances, placed to the rear, front, or side to alert other road users. The pickup #PAE 6499, which was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the highway at a fast rate, collided with the rear of the truck. This resulted in the pickup driver, as well as the other occupants receiving injuries about their bodies and were subsequently extracted from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens and ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex.
Da Tai Lei and Edward Singh were pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty, while Win Wu Lei is currently at the hospital receiving treatment for his injuries, with his condition regarded as serious. “The bodies of the two deceased were escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The truck driver is in custody, assisting with the investigation,” police added.
