Kaieteur News – The multimillion-dollar tax evasion case against businessman and leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed, has been transferred to another magistrate.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Mohamed is facing charges of false declaration and tax evasion, stemming from the alleged underreporting of the purchase price of a luxury vehicle imported in 2020. According to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mohamed fraudulently declared that a Lamborghini Roadster SVJ, which had an actual cost of USD $695,000, was purchased for only USD $75,300. The false declaration allegedly resulted in tax evasion amounting to G$383 million.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Magistrate McGusty explained that she would not be presiding over the trial, citing an already heavy caseload. “I certainly would not be the magistrate doing this trial. I believe I have quite a lot on my plate already, so I propose to transfer the matter to another magistrate,” she stated.
The case will now be reassigned to Court Three before Magistrate Fabayo Azore. The next hearing has been set for October 3, 2025, for a report. The commencement of the Case Management Conference (CMC) and subsequent trial dates will be determined by Magistrate Azore.
Before the matter was adjourned, GRA’s attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, urged the court to set an early date to begin proceedings, emphasising that the case has already faced significant delays. “All we are asking for is not a very long time where we are reporting all the time. Any date next week that the court is mindful to set for a report would be agreeable,” he told the court.
Mohamed is being represented by Attorney Siand Dhurjon. He was first arraigned in May 2025 and placed on $500,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charges before Magistrate McGusty.
