Kaieteur News – On each occasion that the blood of another innocent Palestinian civilian is shed by the Israelis, the drops of blood spatter across the face of America. The more that the Israelis mow down and grind down the Palestinians into the dust, force the hapless to grovel under the boots of their soldiers, the less America can lay claim to be an honest broker for peace.
The less it appears to be a genuine leader for human rights, and all that reasonable men and women consider to be civil. The daily rampages of the Israeli war machine are now so normal that what used to numb before, cause little reaction today. What is being inflicted on the Palestinians no longer qualifies to be called a war. It is a systematic pogrom carried out on a daily basis from the air and on the ground.
Waging war is an expensive proposition, and the longer that the battles and bombardments go on, the more costly the effort becomes. Though not dirt poor, the strength of Israel has one primary source. It is America, with American money and the wealth of American arms poured into the ready hands of Israel that go far in perpetuating this conflict that is now so one-sided that what happens has gone past heinous and grotesque.
By any measurement, what the Israeli forces are delivering on the largely defenseless Palestinians is vengeance multiplied several times over. To be clear, this is not war anymore, so programmed and bloodcurdling it has become. This is man’s inhumanity against his fellow human beings taken to places never seen before, and in the open.
For its part, America doesn’t even work at appearing neutral anymore, so callous it has been to the atrocities committed against the Palestinians, lethal day after lethal day. Over three quarters of a century ago, the Germans were made to pay a harsh price for their brutalities meted against civilian populations, those that clearly fell into the category of noncombatants.
During that same time period, the Japanese were taught the error of their ways, their overreach, their grisly acts against soldiers and civilians, when a firestorm was delivered from the skies onto their heads. Another one followed within days of the first one to seal that message. A world that was on its knees looked upon America as a gift from heaven, liberators who earned every honour and accolade that was extended to them. It was well-deserved, for there was a world lifted up out of the ashes, one that couldn’t give enough praise, so heavy was the debt of gratitude owed to the Americans for their sacrifice of blood and treasure.
Where is that America today, the one of such heroic virtue? Where is that benevolent American face that the Palestinians need so much today, needed so much for so many yesterdays that never came?
Old men and old women killed or maimed as if they are nothing but animals, even lower, given what has happened to them. Young adults, younger children, even babies, blown to pieces by the Israelis in their firefights and from their air flights, and America is today reduced to a study in silence, a picture of nonchalance. Hospitals and schools, food convoys and aid centers, have all come under a relentless barrage of steel and fire. Yet, America is unmoved and unwilling to lift a finger on behalf of the battered and brutalized Palestinians, other than to utter a stray word of caution every now and again.
What is this that the Israelis are engaging in, what’s called war? Whether conflict or war, it is now more than a war against terror, a war against a people, a war against civility, a war against all that is honourable. It is now what amounts to a war against Muslims, for when there is wider escalation of the Gaza assaults in another area of the region, then not much else is left for the intellect to sift through. When America stands limply by, jumps in on the side of the barbarous, then America the Beautiful first inches slowly downward, and then by leaps and bounds, into the territory of America the Pitiful. America: examine self.
