Kaieteur News – The ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has seen a slight decline in voter support across three of its traditional strongholds; Regions Two, Three, and Six at the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections.
According to the official Regional Democratic Council (RDC) election results, the party lost a total of 3,863 votes in those regions compared to the 2020 elections.
In the 2025 General and Regional Elections, the PPP secured 17,442 votes in Region Two, 47,754 in Region Three, and 41,014 in Region Six, amounting to a total of 106,210 votes across these three strongholds. This marks a decline of 3,863 votes compared to the 2020 elections, where the party earned 18,755 votes in Region Two, 47,900 in Region Three, and 43,418 in Region Six, for a combined total of 110,073 votes. The decline comes despite the PPP’s heavy campaign investment this election cycle, which included large rallies, aggressive phone call campaigning, and other outreach efforts.
Despite the dip in these strongholds, the PPP made notable gains in Region Four, traditionally seen as a stronghold of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). This year, the PPP collected 87,028 votes in Region Four, compared to 81,279 votes in 2020, a gain of 5,749 votes. In doing so, the party outpaced its rivals, including APNU (46,770 votes), the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party (41,936 votes), the Alliance for Change (AFC) (1,835 votes), Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) (2,689 votes), and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) (550 votes).
Meanwhile, the WIN party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, made significant inroads in PPP strongholds. In Regions Two, Three, and Six, WIN collected a total of 33,033 votes, 7,433 in Region Two, 13,020 in Region Three, and 12,580 in Region Six. When compared to the WIN party, the PPP secured 73,177 more votes in its strongholds. While still trailing behind the PPP in these regions, WIN’s rapid emergence and strong showing signal a major shift in Guyana’s political dynamics.
Beyond Region Four, the PPP also improved its performance in several other regions. In Region One, the party increased its votes to 9,021 from 7,996 in 2020; in Region Eight, from 2,050 to 2,847 votes; in Region Nine, from 7,066 to 9,853 votes; and in Region Ten, from 3,208 to 4,197 votes.
Overall, the PPP secured a total of 242,497 votes in the 2025 elections, an increase from the 233,336 votes it received in 2020, despite a lower voter turnout this year. This overall performance secured the PPP a second term in office, with President Irfaan Ali retaining power. The final election results revealed a disappointing performance for APNU, which was pushed into third place. The WIN party emerged as the new main opposition force with 16 parliamentary seats, surpassing APNU, which secured just 12 seats. The PPP/C retained its majority with 36 seats.
