Govt. starts distribution of $2B fertilizer subsidy in Region 10
Kaieteur News – The government has started rolling out its $2B fertilizer initiative to farmers in Region 10. The nationwide distribution programme will see farmers receiving one bag of fertilizer per acre of land.
“This initiative is part of a commitment made by H.E. President Dr. Irfaan Ali to support farmers, boost food production, and ensure affordable access to agricultural inputs across the country,” the Ministry of Agriculture said.
In April, at a community engagement at the Hydronie Market Tarmac in Parika, Region Three, President Ali announced that $2B would be transferred to support all of the farmers and ease expenses.
“We are going to transfer within the coming days that $2 billion in fertilizer subsidy to ensure that for every single acre of agriculture, we are going to give one bag of fertilizer. That this is not only this year. This has been our efforts continuously since we came into office,” he said at the community meeting.
In 2023, the government provided $1 billion in fertilizer support for farmers. This included a $900 million allocation for rice farmers and $100 million for cash crop farmers.
