Kaieteur News – New Amsterdam mayor, Wainwright McIntosh has assured residents of New Amsterdam that development in the township will be maintained, even as he now looks ahead from the recently concluded general and regional elections.
A candidate of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), McIntosh noted that his party remains steadfast in its resolve to ensuring that the aspirations for progress and development come to fruition. This, he said, will demand a deal of patience.
“Let me assure you that the voices of our people will not go unheard. Together, we will continue to work tirelessly for better infrastructure, stronger education, improved healthcare, economic empowerment, and a brighter future for our youth. The road ahead requires unity, patience, and dedication, but with your continued partnership, we will achieve the transformation we all desire.”
The 2025 elections, which saw the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) returning to office, saw a low voter turnout, particularly in New Amsterdam and communities on its outskirts. Notwithstanding that reality, Mayor McIntosh noted that each ballot cast was reflective of citizens’ faith in the democratic course, and that supporters’ participation in the process “is a clear expression of your belief in the values of unity, progress, and accountable leadership.”
“As mayor of New Amsterdam, I am humbled by the overwhelming response from the people of this great region. Your commitment and participation in the democratic process have once again demonstrated that Region Six stands firm in its resolve to move forward with dignity, justice, and prosperity for all,” the mayor expressed, in his appreciation message on behalf of his party.
McIntosh was elevated to mayor of Guyana’s oldest town back in 2023, before which he served multiple terms as deputy mayor.
The Irfaan Ali-led ruling PPP/C garnered some 41,320 of the 60,974 valid ballots cast in Region Six according to GECOM. APNU, under Aubrey Norton, secured 6,223.
Figures from the 2020 Elections reflect some 64,569 votes cast. Of this, the lion’s share 43,440 went to the then opposition PPP/C, with the party gaining two seats in the region. The then governing APNU+AFC obtained 20,399 and one seat from within a region swung historically towards the direction of the PPP/C.
