Two women doused with acid, hospitalized

Kaieteur News – Two female cashiers working at the Balwant Singh Hospital are hospitalized after they were doused with a corrosive substance, which appears to be acid, on Wednesday.

The two women have been identified as 26-year-old Nirmala Sukraj and 25-year-old Jilicia Leitch. Reports are that the women were on their way to purchase lunch along East Street when a man approached and threw the liquid on them.

Leitch’s close friend (name withheld) told Kaieteur News that she did not tell him exactly where she was headed at the time but he knows it was on East Street, as they had just exited their place of work.

Leitch suffered more burns than her co-worker and the two women reportedly fled in different directions to seek help. Leitch entered a Guinness Bar in the vicinity of her work place but was turned away with her injuries and the doors shut in her face.

“[She told me] the people put her out and asked her to leave while she was hollering for pain, and she end up running to the supermarket, and she fell onto the ground, and the Chinese people come out with a bottle of water and soak her and take her to the hospital,” he said.

Sukraj managed to return to Balwant Singh Hospital where she was treated.

Leitch, who reportedly suffered burns to her face stomach and left hand, is unable to identify their attacker as she did not see his face. The young woman is still trying to wrap her head around who would want to harm her or her colleague.

Kaieteur News understands that Leitch is in a stable condition in the Burns Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). She is conscious and talking but only allowed two visitors per day due to her injuries.

Meanwhile, police said that Sukraj, the other victim, sustained minor burns to her body has since been discharged from GPHC.

Police are investigating the case and detectives have managed to speak with Leitch while efforts are being made to contact Sukraj.

Leitch reportedly told investigators that they were attacked around 15:39 hrs. by someone in a white car while she was accompanying Sukraj to purchase lunch.

She recounted that they were about six feet away from their workplace when the car drove behind them and someone inside the said car pelted a glass bottle with a liquid substance at them.

Leitch recalled that her body was burning as the car drove away.
