Kaieteur News – A driver attached to the Ministry of Agriculture was shot dead on Thursday night reportedly by an acquaintance, at California Square East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Police said the victim, Gavin Major, 48, of Charles Street, Georgetown was involved in an argument with his killer when he was shot. The fatal shooting took place around 23:15hrs. According to investigators, Major and the suspect knew each other very well.
Major was driving with his cousin, Marlon Hinds, a miner, of 139 Sunflower Park, South Ruimveldt in his car when they passed the suspect’s home.
Hinds told police that the suspect was standing in front of his gate and reportedly fired his gun three times.
Major stopped the car after hearing the gunshots and reversed to the suspect’s house.
He reportedly came out the car and confronted the suspect for firing off his gun.
“He exited the car and told the suspect that why when he saw him, he always discharging gun shots, with that an argument ensued between them”, police told Kaieteur News.
The argument turned deadly when the suspect decided to shoot Major.
Police said he shot Major twice before fleeing the scene. Major reportedly fell to the ground and Hinds along with bystanders picked him up and rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in his car.
Sadly, Major did not make it, he succumbed to the gunshot injuries.
Police said that Major was shot to his left hand and lower abdomen.
Detectives visited the scene and found 9MM spent shells. They were retrieved from the crime scene.
Investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the management and staff of the Ministry of Agriculture via its Facebook page extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Gavin Major.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and share in the grief of all those who knew and loved him”, the ministry stated.
