Kaieteur News – Police has charged a 19-year-old labourer with the murder of a clothes vendor who was shot dead more than one month ago during a robbery on First Street, Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Reports are that the 51-year-old woman identified as Desiree Hyman was shot six times while resisting two masked bandits on a motorcycle. She died at the scene.
Police on Thursday said that it has charged one of the suspects. He was identified as Joshua Roach of North East La Penitence Squatting area.
He reportedly appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate Court on Thursday before Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess.
Roach was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison until October 14, 2025.
On the day Hyman was shot dead, Kaieteur News learnt that she was selling at Lot 297 Mocha, when two masked men on a motorcycle pounced on her.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), two suspects approached the vendor on a motorcycle and attempted to rob her, however, she resisted, resulting in her receiving six gunshot wounds. Three in the left of her lower abdomen, two on the right of her lower abdomen and one under her right breast.
The suspects then made good their escape on the motorcycle in a northern direction.
Her husband had told the press that he hopes justice will be served while noting that his wife did not have any problem with anyone.
He had claimed too that an eyewitness had trailed the suspected bandits in a direction towards South Ruimveldt, Georgetown and noted that one of them had on a helmet while the other was masked.
