Kaieteur News – Forty-Six-year-old Ishwar Singh reportedly stabbed his common-law wife to death on Wednesday morning before setting their Lot 22, Second Street Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara home on fire.
Their daughter, Preeta Singh, age 24, was asleep at the time, but was awakened by her mother’s scream just in time to feel the heat from the inferno. Her father reportedly died later from burns about his body.
The dead woman has been identified as 50-year-old Paula Abraham.
Investigators were told that the tragedy took place around 01:30hrs in the bottom flat of a two-story concrete and wooden house.
The couple’s daughter told police that she was awakened by her mother’s screams. She said she suddenly felt a heat in the house and got-up immediately.
Realising the house was on fire, she reportedly opened one of the doors and ran out of the house alerting neighbours and relatives. When they came to her assistance, Preeta said she noticed fire spreading from a burning sofa in the hallway of their home.

Shortly after, her father emerged from the burning apartment with burns about his body.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was called and fire fighters responded promptly and put out the fire.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he later succumbed while receiving treatment.
His wife was subsequently found lying on her bed motionless with a stab wound to her neck. Her clothes and bed were blood stained. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Quick response by the fire service prevented her body from being burnt or receiving any burn injuries. Only part of the bottom flat was destroyed by the fire and the top flat was damaged.
Speaking with investigators, the couple’s daughter alleged that Ishwar Singh consumes a lot of alcohol and habitually beat and threatened to kill the victim.

The domestic related killing comes one week after a 36-year-old man, Alroy Solomon gunned down his wife Atiya Solomon, 36, at Charlotte Street, Georgetown. He then shot and injured their 10-year-old son before turning the gun on himself.
