Kaieteur News – A 36-year-old miner, early Saturday morning, was chopped to death by a group of persons at 14 Miles Issano Landing, Middle Mazaruni River.
Dead is Junior Williams of Pamela Road, Mahdia.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a statement said that the incident occurred at about 05:00h. Williams was reportedly consuming alcohol with friends at the 14 Miles Issano Landing when he was “accosted by two male suspects in an attempted robbery.”
“The victim, who was armed with a knife, managed to fend off the initial attack. However, the suspects subsequently went away and armed themselves with a cutlass, returned, and dealt the victim several chops about his body before fleeing the scene,” police said in a statement.
According to police, a resident of 14 Miles Issano discovered the injured man lying on the ground and sought assistance from other residents to take Williams to the Mahdia District Hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the miner was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was examined and two gaping chop wounds were seen on the right hand and between the right index finger and thumb, as well as bruise marks on the shoulder area.
Williams’s body is at the Mahdia District Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, one of the suspects was arrested and is currently assisting with the investigation. Statements have also been taken.
