Kaieteur News – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday stated that his party used various sources to gather citizens’ phone numbers, which the party then uses to contact electors to garner their support for the PPP at the upcoming elections.
Citizens have reported being contacted by agents of the PPP over the past few weeks. Some had questioned how the party accessed their phone number and even their names and it had been suggested that the ruling party used information gathered by the government during the $100,000 cash grant process.
At his press conference at the Freedom House on Thursday, Jagdeo disclosed, “We acquired those numbers from various sources, that’s all I’m gonna say.” When pressed further and asked to address concerns of government data privacy, Jagdeo said those data are always protected. He added, “We have a new law that we passed and the data is protected.”
Jagdeo argued that with the PPP’s achievements, he finds it baffling that other parties would still believe they will win at the upcoming elections. “And I’m not saying this because of arrogance again,” he stated.
The PPP General Secretary noted that the party has thousands of activists across the country who is taking the PPP’s message directly to electors. “We’re making calls to people at home and respectfully asking them to support us. This is done around the world. I saw some of them have a problem with that too, that we will call someone and then say, you know, we value your vote so much, we’re going to ask you to vote for us, not take it for granted,” Jagdeo added.
He noted that he has seen persons criticizing this move but argued that what the PPP is doing is different from the other parties. “We’ll call you and ask you and then listen to you. And that is what we’re doing. There are lots of our activists who are doing that… so we’re working for people’s support and vote. The others take it for granted or believe they can just buy people’s votes,” Jagdeo added.
